LingoPT

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 September 2026

LingoPT (www.lingopt.com) is a free beta app for practising a foreign language, run by DeveloperJay (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use LingoPT, why we collect it, who helps us process it, and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR).

1. Who we are

DeveloperJay is the controller of your personal data. You can contact us about anything in this policy at admin@lingopt.com.

2. What we collect

  • Account details: your email address and name. If you sign in with Google, we also receive your Google profile name and photo. Sign-in is handled by Clerk on our behalf.
  • Profile and settings: the first name you give us, your language level, the language you're learning and the topics you choose.
  • Practice activity: everything you type into exercises (translations, dictation answers and conversation replies), the sentences, stories and conversation messages we generate for you, and the scores, corrections and feedback you receive.
  • Technical data: your IP address, browser details and request logs, kept by our hosting providers for security and troubleshooting.

We don't collect payment details, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers.

3. How we use your data

  • To provide LingoPT: creating your account, generating exercises, grading your answers and showing your progress and review items. Our lawful basis is contract: we need this data to provide the service you signed up for.
  • To keep LingoPT secure and working: usage limits, preventing abuse and fixing problems. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests.

We don't sell your data, share it for advertising, or use it for marketing.

4. How AI is used

LingoPT uses OpenAI's models to generate exercises, grade your answers, write feedback and produce audio. To do this, what you type into an exercise is sent to OpenAI. OpenAI doesn't use data sent through its API to train its models by default, and may keep it for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse before deleting it.

Scores and feedback are generated automatically to help you practise. They have no legal or similarly significant effect on you. AI feedback can be wrong; see our Terms of Use.

Please don't type personal information (for example real names, addresses or health details) into exercises.

5. Who we share your data with

We use these service providers (processors) to run LingoPT. They only process your data on our instructions:

  • Clerk: sign-in and account management (United States)
  • Vercel: website hosting (United States, serving from Europe)
  • Railway: hosting for our API and database (EU region)
  • OpenAI: AI exercise generation, grading and audio (United States)

If you choose to sign in with Google, Google's own privacy policy applies to your Google account.

Some of these providers are based in, or may access data from, the United States. Where data leaves the UK, it is protected by recognised safeguards such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.

We may also disclose data if the law requires us to.

6. How long we keep your data

  • Your account, settings and practice activity are kept while your account exists, and deleted within 30 days of you asking us to delete your account.
  • Hosting logs are kept for short periods set by our providers.
  • OpenAI may keep exercise data for up to 30 days, as described above.

7. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it in a portable format. To use any of these rights, email admin@lingopt.com. We'll reply within one month.

To delete your account, email us from the address you signed up with. We'll delete your sign-in account and all of your practice data within 30 days.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.

8. Cookies and browser storage

LingoPT doesn't use advertising or analytics cookies, so there's no cookie banner. We only store:

  • Sign-in cookies set by Clerk to keep you securely signed in (strictly necessary).
  • A sidebar cookie that remembers whether you left the sidebar open or closed.
  • Your light/dark theme choice and whether you've seen the welcome message, saved in your browser's local and session storage.

9. Children

LingoPT is for people aged 13 and over. If we learn that someone under 13 has created an account, we'll delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the “Last updated” date at the top.
